EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION DID YOU KNOW? The CDC reported in 2006 that 1.6 million emergency room patients could not provide their emergency contact information because they were incapacitated. On September 8, 2008, Ohio became one of the first states to make a next of kin registration process available. Any holder of a valid Ohio driver license, commercial driver license, temporary permit or identification card has the option of providing the name and information of a contact person they wish to be notified in the event the individual is involved in a crash or emergency and is otherwise unable to communicate with the contact person. Next of kin/emergency contact information can be entered online at http://www.bmv.ohio.gov/ or you can download a form and send it to the Ohio BMV. Next of Kin registration is a result of a partnership between citizens, the legislature, ODPS, the BMV and local law enforcement who helped start the initiative in Ohio. ODPS is committed to working with all of its partners to develop and implement initiatives like this that will increase the level of service for Ohioans. |

ICE YOUR PHONE Originally established in the United Kingdom, the ICE YOUR PHONE campaign encourages cell phone users to enter in their emergency contact information into their cell phone under the heading of ICE, an acronym for In Case of Emergency. ICE allows paramedics or emergency responders to contact the designated relative/next of kin in an emergency situation in the event the user is incapacitated. HOW TO ICE YOUR CELL PHONE: Choose a responsible person to be your In Case of Emergency (ICE) Contact. Record their information. Inform your ICE Contact that you have chosen them as your designated contact and provide them with information that may affect your treatment. Remember to provide your "MAD", for Medicines, Allergies and Doctors. Add this contact as a new entry, with their phone number, in your mobile phone address book under the heading "ICE". Example: ICE-William or ICE-Dad. Apply an ICE Sticker to the back of your phone. This will serve as a visual alert that you have established a communication protocol. To get an ICE Sticker go to http://www.icesticker.com/store/. |
